Trier 12/5/15

We are very thankful to our dear friends the Nicholls, Ian and Karen, who bicycled this peaceful valley and said it should be part on our travel plans. The train from Koblenz to Trier follows the winding river. Many miles of vineyards clothe the hill side. Bicyclist, barge traffic, campers and many charming villages entertained us both ways.

Trier is known for its Roman ruins. They say it is the center of antiquity in Germany. We visited two basilicas. The first, Basilika Konstantin was like a brick barn with no adornments but a few modern oil paintings on the inside walls. The second, Liebfrauen a gorgeous place with modern stain glass windows. The Porta Nigra is the colossal city gates and the introduction into the past. There are many Roman ruins from baths to an amphitheater built in the second century AD. We stopped for lunch and had a huge bratworst covered with mustard. We opted out of the curry sauce.

Once back in Koblenz, We walked through old town to the Mosel and back. Once again, early to bed
