Tues may 19 Munich
We started off early to walk through the English Gardens. We crossed town dodging bicycles and raindrops. It seems everyone in Munich rides a bicycle. Half of the sidewalk is for bicycles so you have to watch carefully where you walk. This makes it hard for Stu who has his head buried in a map or a GPS, or both.
The English garden is like San Francisco's Golden Gate Park or New York's Central Park. The Englischer Garten is one of the largest urban parks in Europe. It was laid out by an American in 1789. It is a beautiful park with streams running through it. There is a waterfall and a little distance from it the current is running fast enough to form a standing wave that surfers wait in line to ride. The current is generated by the output of a pump that maintains river flow. The garden is broken in half by a bridge into the South and North portions a distance of a little over 7km. Each portion has a lake, a boathouse and a beer garden. At the south end there is a Chinese pagoda and beer garden. The north end has an old hunting lodge, Aumeistevide, that is a restaurant and a beer garden. Here we enjoyed beer and pretzels served to us by Corinna. She and her friend Franziska are coming to visit San Francisco in September. We made her promise to get in touch with us so we could show her around.
That is just about the right size beer, Stu. Joan has to catch up.
